Our Story

I’m Georgie, mother of three, early childhood teacher, yoga teacher and lover of all things interiors. After the birth of our second daughter and a mammoth renovation, I found the solid wood floors that I loved were sadly neither the kindest nor the safest space for our newborn to discover the world. Add a two-year-old older sister with a passion for mess making and diving off the couch, I quickly realised we needed some serious floor support. So began the search for the perfect play mat.

I was disappointed to discover that many existing styles and brands available could not tick all the boxes. They were either made up of toxic substances including PVC, BPA, and other nasty chemicals, brightly coloured and illustrated (often in the form of a road map, which we didn’t want dominating our lounge), or reliant on consistent washing to withstand the spills of both a toddler and baby. No parent needs to add to their already never-ending washing pile.

The Solution

I had a vision for a play mat that was supportive, non-toxic, easy-care and yet still stylish in the home. I wanted a play mat that we could leave out at all time and one that could become a part of the interior landscape, but there was nothing that quite fitted the mould. I then discovered TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) as a non-toxic and environmentally-friendly alternative to PVC. A product that could provide softness and support for young bodies as well as being a waterproof, wipe-clean play space for all. Add a timeless reversible design and we had found our perfect product.

The next year I dove deep into hunting for a supplier who could provide quality TPU that complied with New Zealand and worldwide safety standards. Many, many, months later we are finally here. I’m so excited to share Little Finch Play Mats with New Zealand and to provide safe, luxury and contemporary play spaces for all of your families.
